Arctic Nearshore Impact Monitoring in the Production
Area
Baseline characterization of Anthropogenic Contamination in Biota
Associated with the Alaska OCS Liberty and Northstar Oil and Gas
Production Units in the Nearshore Beaufort Sea. AMS is currently
executing a multi-year project it designed to determine the biotic
impact of several new oil and gas development projects on federal
leases in the Beaufort Sea (Alaska's North Slope).
This project is being conducted for the US Minerals Management
Service, Alaska OCS Region, AMS's role in this project is to determine
the baseline levels of PAH's and other organic contaminants in fish,
birds and mammals associated with the development area. This information
is necessary to investigations of contaminant effects in the environment,
and to investigations of human health effects from subsistence use
of biotic resources. AMS is using a variety of techniques to characterize
and document PAH, POP and heavy metal contaminants and routes of
exposure like CYP1A enzyme levels.
Acquisition of base line contaminant data is also necessary for
long -term environmental monitoring and investigations of cumulative
environmental impacts from ongoing oil and gas development. AMS
is subcontracting to Arthur D. Little, Inc. on this project. Mr.
Jordan Gold is the field manager and co-principal investigator with
Dr. Robert Spies on this project.
